‘Outstanding’ ex QPR loan star available on free transfer after Norwich City release

The former QPR loanee, Sam McCallum, has become a subject of interest following his departure from Norwich City.

Having left Championship side Norwich City at the expiration of his contract, former QPR standout Sam McCallum is now available on a free transfer this summer.

The 23-year-old featured in 34 matches across all competitions for the Canaries this season, notably appearing as a substitute in both legs of the play-off semi-finals against Leeds United this month. With 108 Championship appearances under his belt in recent years, McCallum is a familiar figure to R’s supporters.

McCallum had a loan spell at QPR during the 2021/22 season from Norwich City, making 19 appearances for the London club. Despite battling injuries during that campaign, he endeared himself to the fans and even earned the Young Player of the Year Award.

One memorable moment for McCallum was scoring his first goal for QPR in a 2-1 loss against Bournemouth. Despite the defeat, he received praise from fans online, who hailed him as ‘underrated’ and ‘outstanding’.

Norwich City confirmed McCallum’s release on social media, sparking surprise and questioning from some supporters, while R’s fans expressed their desire for the former loanee to return to Loftus Road.

Marti Cifuentes may consider strengthening the left-back position this summer to provide competition for Kenneth Paal. However, any potential interest in McCallum on a free transfer would need to be swift. The Pink Un reports that Championship rivals Stoke City are already being touted as a ‘possible destination’ for the defender.

In March, McCallum disclosed that discussions had indeed occurred between himself and Norwich City, indicating the club’s interest in retaining him. Following a victory over Plymouth Argyle, he stated, “There’s been talks but we’ve not agreed anything yet. There are always contracts to play for, and I’m coming to the end of mine. It’s obviously there, but we have seven games left, so the focus is probably not on the contract at the moment. The focus is just on getting into the play-offs.

“I’ve got this run of games coming now, and I’ve had the Stoke game, and I feel like I can show what I’ve got. It’s a shame that Dimi [Giannoulis] is out now because we’ve got a lot of games coming up and we need all the players that we can get. Personally, I just have to take one game at a time and kick on from there.”
