‘Best version of myself’ – Exclusive: QPR, West Brom target opens up on flying form as deal winds down

Oxford United winger and rumoured QPR, West Brom and Hull City target Josh Murphy has given manager Des Buckingham credit for his starring form of late.

Oxford United man Murphy has caught the eye in the Premier League with Cardiff City and in the second-tier with Norwich City before. However, until recently, the 29-year-old had struggled to find form with Oxford United.

The London-born winger struggled for action under Liam Manning but has been given regular starts by Des Buckingham and since returning to the side in February, he’s been in fine form.

Murphy’s return of six goals and three assists in 14 games has been key in thrusting the U’s back into the play-off fight while West Brom, QPR and Hull City have all been linked.

Now, Murphy has opened up on his improved form of late. Speaking exclusively to Sky Bet on behalf of The72, the Oxford United man highlighted the role Buckingham has had in his strong displays alongside his own continued hard work.

He said:

“My recent change in form is down to hard work, from my side, and the manager for putting his faith and trust in me, allowing me to go and express myself, being the best version of myself.

Kicking on again

Recent seasons may not have been the easiest for Murphy but he’s been back to his dangerous best under Buckingham. The hope will be that this can carry into next season, wherever he may be.

Oxford United can still earn a play-off finish but they are currently just outside the top six. They’re level on points with 6th placed Lincoln City and one behind Barnsley in 5th, while Blackpool behind them remain in the hunt too.

If Murphy is on song against Exeter City, it will go a long way to breaking into the play-offs.

A decision will need to be made over his future when the campaign comes to a close though. His deal is up this summer and with QPR, West Brom and Hull City keen, it could be that Murphy has options away from the Kassam Stadium after his impressive 2024.
