SKY REPORT: Decision made by Sky Sports and the EFL that affects Pompey, Bolton, and Derby

There will be significant changes to Pompey supporters’ and English Football League clubs’ fan experiences starting with the upcoming season.

Earlier this year, a new £895 million TV deal was announced, with marketing benefits estimated to be worth over £40 million. Consequently, Sky Sports will broadcast 1,059 EFL matches, of which 328 will come from the Championship, where Portsmouth intends to be represented.

One of the many changes is that each weekend, ten EFL fixtures will be aired, half of which will consist of a combination of League One and League Two games and five of which will come from the Championship. If John Mousinho’s team makes it to the second division of English football, they may find themselves on TV practically every other week or not playing at the customary Saturday afternoon kickoff time of 3 p.m.

Watching Pompey’s first game back in the Championship, should they be promoted, will be available. Pompey last played in the Championship in the 2011–12 season. All opening, closing, and midweek games will be televised by Sky Sports, along with games on bank holidays, Easter, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day.

Article 48, which prohibits games from being televised from 2.45 pm to 5.15 pm, will still apply despite the new television agreement. It is unclear how the fixture scheduling will operate. With the exception of a game on Monday, games are typically televised on Friday nights, Saturday lunchtime or early evening, and an early Sunday kickoff.

Supporters in the UK will no longer be able to access iFollow due to Sky Sports’ dedication to expanding its coverage. Although there will no longer be a streaming option, fans can still listen to audio commentary.

Regardless of their division, Pompey will play in the Carabao Cup in August. Starting with the 2024–2025 season, all of the competition’s games as well as the EFL Trophy will be televised.
