SACKED: Portsmouth beating league one rivals cost manager his job

If Barnsley defeats Northampton on Saturday, they will secure a play-off spot, currently ranked fifth in League One.

The thrilling 3-2 victory that Pompey secured over Barnsley on Tuesday night turned out to be manager Neill Collins’ second-to-last game leading the Tykes.

That came about after the play-off-chasing Oakwell team, with one game left in the season, decided to sever ties with their manager.

A 3-2 loss at Blackpool on Saturday came after the Blues’ thrilling celebrations at home after winning the League One title and promotion back to the Championship following their defeat at Fratton Park.
In addition, the Barnsley board has chosen to sever ties with the forty-year-old less than a year after he was appointed, given that the team has lost their last five games.
Ahead of their season-ending matchup with Northampton at Oakwell on Saturday, the Tykes are presently ranked fifth in League One. If they lose there, Barnsley could be surpassed by Lincoln, Oxford, and Blackpool in the race for a play-off spot.

The decision was confirmed by the club in a statement issued on Monday. The statement said, “Barnsley Football Club can confirm Neill Collins’ departure as head coach.”

“Collins was appointed last summer, and the board of directors feels that a change is necessary despite several successful periods during the season.”

“Neill has been extremely professional throughout the period with which I have worked with him; he has done everything he can to push the team in the direction that we all want Barnsley to go,” said Mladen Sormaz, Director of Football.

For the duration of our collaboration, he has acted with dedication and professionalism. But since we have a pivotal season finale coming up, we believe this is the ideal moment to make a shift. We appreciate all of the supporters and ask you all to come out and support the team this Saturday when they play Northampton. In the upcoming days, supporters will receive updates.

Martin Devaney will lead the transitional phase.
