Portsmouth and Derby dealt early transfer blow as former £11m Cardiff winger makes Oxford admission

Josh Murphy has expressed his desire to stay with Oxford United following their promotion to the Championship. Despite being linked with a free transfer to Portsmouth, the winger, who scored both goals in Oxford’s League One play-off final victory over Bolton, is nearing the end of his current contract. However, Murphy has indicated he is happy at Oxford and would like to continue with the club.

Murphy told SportsBoom.com, “I’d love to be in these colours next year. I’m happy and settled at this club. I’m still enjoying it. I’m buzzing for the gaffer (Des Buckingham), it’s been an up and down time since he’s been here. But I think he’s a brilliant coach and a brilliant manager, he got what he deserves. I’m just happy for him and the boys. I’ve got every faith we can do well in the Championship next season. We play a good brand of football and this is an exciting group of players.”

Portsmouth, looking to bolster their wide options, had been considering Murphy as a target. With Abu Kamara returning to Norwich after a successful loan, and Gavin Whyte and Anthony Scully underperforming since their permanent moves, Pompey is seeking reinforcements. Paddy Lane, who scored 12 goals and provided seven assists during their League One title-winning season, remains a key player for them.

Murphy has made 62 appearances for Oxford since joining from Cardiff in 2022, scoring 10 goals and registering eight assists. His commitment to staying at Oxford could be a setback for Portsmouth as they aim to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
