David Tivey has joined Plymouth Argyle as their physical performance coach, initially on a “consultative” basis through the conclusion of the season.

Tivey’s extensive background includes working as the England National Team Performance Coach at The Football Association under Roy Hodgson, Sam Allardyce, and Gareth Southgate. In addition, he was a member of the support team when Steve Cooper guided England to victory in the Under-17 World Cup in 2017.

As a result, Argyle director of football Neil Dewsnip and head coach Ian Foster are familiar with him from their respective tenures at The FA. Turner, who resigned from his position as head of fitness and conditioning in January to rejoin former Pilgrims manager Steven Schumacher at Stoke City, was replaced by him.

Tivey left the FA in 2019 to work with Cooper at Swansea City as the first team fitness coach. In 2021, he accompanied Cooper to Nottingham Forest, where he was the head of sports science. When the Premier League team fired Cooper in December, Tivey and the majority of his backroom staff also left.

Dewsnip stated: “Argyle will benefit immediately from David’s vast experience and ability, which Ian and I know well from our time at The FA. Sam Laycock and Gareth Law have been instrumental in keeping the team healthy, and I would like to thank them both individually for their recent hard work.

“Now though is the right time to bring in someone of David’s experience as we reach a pivotal stage of the season and he will also support as we look to appoint a full-time head of sports science.”
