How will the newest player to join the Suns aid in the postseason push?
The point guard option that the Phoenix Suns are going with isn’t the person that many had predicted.
After playing the first half of the 2014–15 season in Phoenix, former All-NBA PG Isaiah Thomas is likely to spend the remainder of the season back in the Valley.
After suffering a catastrophic hip injury, Thomas changed teams in recent seasons. This will be his first NBA game since 2022.
The most important query is how a guard who hasn’t appeared on the NBA scene for almost two years can benefit the Suns immediately.
The solutions are straightforward: spark-plug scoring and leadership.
Thomas, who joined the NBA in 2011, will keep adding experience to a team already rich with veterans.
The Suns made a wise choice in bringing in a seasoned, well-respected player in Thomas, if only to give him an opportunity to add a new perspective to the locker room.
Regarding Thomas, Suns coach Frank Vogel responded, “I think he’s someone the world roots for,” earlier this week.
Thomas has also been a prolific scorer for a long time; his career average of 17.7 points per game and his 36.2% three-point shooting percentage suggest that the former MVP candidate may still have some left in him.
His leadership qualities and ability to put the ball in the basket could be just what the Suns need to avoid having to participate in the play-in tournament in mid-April, even if he is probably only going to be a factor during the regular season.
Another experienced voice in the locker room doesn’t hurt when it comes postseason time for a Phoenix team still trying to establish continuity and meld together.
The Suns’ next game will be against the Philadelphia 76ers at home on Wednesday night. According to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports, the team anticipates having Thomas available.
