Regarding the Suns, Kendrick Perkins says something unexpected.

Head coach Frank Vogel of the Phoenix Suns reacts during the first half against the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center on January 24, 2024 in Dallas, Texas.

Over the past couple of seasons, the Phoenix Suns have been pulling out all the stops in order to maximize their chances of winning it all, with some believing that their championship window was closing.

As a result, the Suns made some bold moves, with the team acquiring Kevin Durant in a blockbuster deal with the Brooklyn Nets last season and the team bringing in Bradley Beal via trade ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.

The three-headed monster of Durant, Beal, and Devin Booker was thought to be enough to propel Phoenix to the top of the Western Conference to compete with the likes of the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets, but things haven’t panned out the way they anticipated.

The Suns are currently in fifth place in the Western Conference standings with a record of 26-18, which isn’t all that bad, but few expect this team to be able to compete with the best of the best come playoff time, especially with the team struggling to stay healthy.

Kendrick Perkins of ESPN went as far as to say that the Suns are a “sleeper” in the West because it would be surprising to see this team win it all this season, via NBA on ESPN.

“A team that has Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Devin Booker, this team feels like a sleeper in the West,” he said.

At this point in time, Perkins’ assessment of the Suns is right on the money, as this team isn’t scaring anyone heading into the second half of the regular season.

This team was built to be a legitimate title contender in the West, and it remains to be seen if it will ever earn that distinction.
