Insider Says Seahawks Could Get “Fresh Start” With Hurts Trade

Seattle Seahawks Could Get 'Fresh Start' With Trade for Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, Says NFL Insider - Sports Illustrated Seattle Seahawks News, Analysis and More

After coach Pete Carroll was fired, the Seattle Seahawks are embarking on a new chapter in their history. However, an NFL source believes that this “fresh start” could take several forms, even though he hasn’t seen any supporting data yet. On his podcast on Wednesday, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk conjectured that the Philadelphia Eagles’ recent sacking of offensive coordinator Brian Johnson might cause Jalen Hurts to become “unhappy” and perhaps even lead to a trade. After one lackluster season, there hasn’t been any indication that Hurts would suddenly want to leave Philadelphia, but Florio believes the dominoes could start to fall, and if they do, the Seahawks would be a team to watch. © Joe Nicholson, USA TODAY: Joe Nicholson © USA TODAY “I’m not suggesting that it should happen, nor am I claiming that it will. Regarding a possible trade, Florio remarked, “I’m saying it could.” “He could say ‘I want out.'” Depending on the incoming head coach, Florio stated, “You can also throw the Seahawks in.” “You have the option to terminate Geno Smith’s contract, and if the new head coach determines that Jalen Hurts needs a fresh start and wants to leave Philadelphia, we can create something very special here,’ you can bring him in.” Given that Hurts and Johnson have been friends for a “very, very long time” and that the quarterback brought up Johnson when discussing how the Eagles were “fixing everything,” many people assumed that Hurts had accidentally disclosed that Johnson would be coming back for a second season after joining the team as the quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia. Florio makes this point clear. That didn’t transpire, therefore the Eagles are currently looking for a new offensive coordinator who most likely won’t share Hurts and Johnson’s camaraderie. However, Hurts would be the first to remind you that “business is business” or any other philosophical stance he frequently takes when addressing the media. Hurts may or may not be pleased with the Eagles’ decision to fire Johnson, but that’s hardly a good enough reason to become so “unhappy” with the team that he demands a trade after being formally recognized as the team’s quarterback in the offseason and signing a five-year, $255 million contract. However, in the real world, the hardship of having to accept his enormous deal and the time it would take to get him might not be worth it for a quarterback who may have to make amends to himself after this season’s inconsistent play. Prior to considering any crazy trade ideas, the Seahawks need to select a new head coach. The only two teams still without a head coach are Seattle and the Washington Commanders.
