Embiid explains how he scored 50 points with facial paralysis: I don’t like it when my mouth is facing away from me

In the Philadelphia 76ers’ 125-111 victory over the New York Knicks, star Joel Embiid scored 50 points, helping the team finish 1-2 in their NBA Playoffs first-round series.

Despite receiving treatment for Bell’s palsy during the week, the American centre, who recently resigned from France, shot an incredible 13 of 19 from the field and 19 of 21 from the free throw line.

Joel Embiid: Yeah, it’s pretty annoying. My left side of my face, my mouth and my eye. It’s been tough

Embiid attended the press conference wearing sunglasses, and acknowledged that during the game he had to overcome symptoms of Bell’s Palsy such as blurred vision and dry eyes.

“Yes, it’s quite annoying. My left side of my face, my mouth and my eye. It’s been rough. But I’m not one to give up. I’m going to keep fighting anything. It’s unfortunate, that’s how I look at it. But it’s not an excuse. I have to keep fighting,” Embiid said after the game.

On his recovery time the Sixers center explained that “it could be weeks, it could be months.”

“I just hope it stays that way. I have a pretty face. I don’t like it when my mouth looks the other way. The situation is very unfortunate, but everything happens for a reason.”

What is Bell’s Palsy?

Joanna Guillen Valera shares in ‘Cuidate Plus’ a study from the University of Navarra about Bell’s Palsy: “It is a form of temporary facial paralysis that is caused by damage or trauma to one of the two facial nerves. It is caused by a failure of the facial nerve, which does not carry nerve orders to the main muscles of the face”.

Symptoms of Bell’s Palsy suffered by Joel Embiid?

  • Facial asymmetry.
  • The eyebrow is drooping and cannot be raised, nor can the forehead be wrinkled.
  • Difficulty closing the eye, so it appears to be more open than the other eye.
  • Irritation of the eye with dryness or tearing.
  • Deviation of the corner of the mouth towards the healthy side, which makes it difficult to smile, show the teeth or blow.
  • Sometimes sounds are heard more intensely and annoyingly through the ear on the affected side.
  • The sense of taste may be altered and you may have problems tasting food.
