Taylan May, a Penrith Panthers winger, has been arrested and charged with domestic violence.

Police in New South Wales say a 22-year-old man was apprehended on Saturday morning.

The ABC confirmed that May was the individual apprehended.

According to a statement from NSW Police, the winger is accused of punching a woman he knows after an incident in April.

“About 5am today (Saturday), officers attached to Nepean Police Area Command arrested a 22-year-old man at an address at Penrith, in relation to an alleged domestic violence incident which occurred last month,” the NSW Police stated.

“Police were alerted at 9 p.m. on Monday, April 8, 2024, that the man reportedly assaulted a woman he knew after an argument at a home in Werrington.

“It is alleged he punched her in the face and leg.”

May has been charged with assault resulting in real bodily harm (DV), as well as two charges of stalking/intimidating with the intent to cause physical or other harm.

He was given bail and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, May 28.

The Panthers will face the Warriors in Brisbane’s Magic Round on Sunday afternoon.

May did not travel to Brisbane with the Panthers squad and is not anticipated to play in the game.

In a statement, the Panthers stated that they had informed the NRL Integrity Unit of the charges.

“The Penrith Panthers are aware of an alleged incident involving player Taylan May, which has resulted in police charges,” the club stated.

“The Panthers have informed the NRL Integrity Unit and will cooperate throughout the process.

“As this is a legal matter, the club will make no further comment at this stage.”

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo also addressed the situation during an interview on commercial radio later on Saturday, saying it was regrettable that such a conversation had to occur.

“They’re pretty serious charges related to an alleged offence,” he told Triple M.

Abdo stated that the NRL was analyzing the facts related to the charges and would decide what action to take within the next several days.

“We have clear policies for this … we’ll respect that process and we’ll move forward once we have more information,” he stated.
