Where are the key areas for U’s to focus in summer transfer window?

With Oxford United’s retained list now public, the focus shifts to their summer transfer window priorities.

Billy Bodin and James Henry’s departures create gaps in the creative midfield, and a replacement for winger Marcus Browne is also needed.

Starting with the goalkeeper position, it’s clear United requires a new keeper. Jamie Cumming, who improved significantly towards the end of the season after a shaky start on loan from Chelsea in January, might be an option if his Stamford Bridge contract expires this summer.

Although Simon Eastwood and Ed McGinty are already on United’s books, securing a reliable goalkeeper, possibly Cumming, will be a top priority for Ed Waldron and his recruitment team.

Right back is another position needing attention with the departure of Brentford loanee Fin Stevens. The 21-year-old has shown improved defensive skills and could be re-signed, either on loan or permanently. Sam Long’s ability to cover both right back and center half will be crucial next season.

At center back, United is well-stocked. Elliott Moore and Ciaron Brown should handle the Championship well, with Stephan Negru and Jordan Thorniley as reserves. James Golding may be loaned out, while Stuart Findlay returns from his loan at Kilmarnock. If any of Negru, Thorniley, Golding, or Findlay leave this summer, a replacement will be needed, ideally one challenging Moore and Brown for starting positions.

If Joe Bennett signs a new deal, United will be secure at left back with Greg Leigh also available.

The midfield already includes Cameron Brannagan, Marcus McGuane, Oisin Smyth, and Josh Johnson, with Josh McEachran negotiating a new contract. An athletic defensive midfielder would be a valuable addition for tougher matchups next season.

Tyler Goodrham, Ruben Rodrigues, and Max Woltman are the current No. 10 options, but adding someone with second-tier experience would help manage the workload.

On the wings, Owen Dale is the only player signed for next season. Even if Josh Murphy re-signs, at least two more wingers are needed.

In attack, another striker similar to Mark Harris would provide essential backup. Will Goodwin and Gatlin O’Donkor are alternative center forwards, though O’Donkor might go on loan again to continue his development.
