Ex-City winger Murphy wants to extend Oxford stay…

Wembley hero Josh Murphy is eager to commit his future to newly promoted Oxford United next season.

The former Norwich City academy graduate scored twice in a 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers, securing Oxford’s promotion from League One.

Now, Oxford prepares for their first Championship season since 1999, and Murphy could face a reunion with the Canaries if an agreement is reached. Sold by Norwich to Cardiff for £11 million in 2018, Murphy is out of contract this summer and has been linked to Southampton, West Brom, Sunderland, and some MLS clubs due to his stellar performances at Kassam Stadium. However, the winger has expressed a preference to stay at Oxford and contribute to their Championship survival mission.

“I’d love to be in these colours next year,” Murphy told SportsBoom.com. “I’m happy and settled at this club. I’m still enjoying it. I’m buzzing for the gaffer (Des Buckingham). It’s been an up and down time since he’s been here, but I think he’s a brilliant coach and manager. He got what he deserves, and I’m just happy for him and the boys.”

“I’ve got every faith we can do well in the Championship next season. We play a good brand of football, and this is an exciting group of players.”

Des Buckingham, who succeeded Liam Manning last year and led his boyhood club to promotion, hopes Murphy stays at Oxford as he plans for next season.

“I hope so,” Buckingham emphasized. “I told him that when we were lifting the trophy. We will do as much as we possibly can to keep Josh. We want good people at this club. He is a very good footballer and fits our style of football.”

“If we can keep him and he wants to stay, we will do everything we can, and it won’t be for the lack of trying.”

“It was wonderful to see Josh get his two goals. He has been a delight to work with since I walked through the door.”
