Former Ohio State offensive lineman transfers in-state to MAC program

Columbus, Ohio — Jakob James, who signed with Toledo on Wednesday, became the most recent Ohio State football graduate to decide to stay in the state to pursue his profession.

On December 4, the backup center registered his name on the NCAA transfer portal. Along with safety Kye Stokes and running back Evan Pryor, who both committed to Cincinnati through the portal, he is one of the former Buckeyes who is now playing at other Ohio programs.

According to the 247 Sports composite, James was a three-star prospect out of Cincinnati’s Elder High School who was ranked No. 859 in the 2020 class. Despite spending part of the previous two seasons in the two-deep mix, he only saw six plays in three games this season.

In light of his exit and Vic Cutler’s move to Louisville, OSU was fairly short-handed at center heading into the Cotton Bowl. Although Joshua Padilla and Austin Siereveld are among the freshmen who potentially play a significant role at the position next season, Carson Hinzman is still the starting pitcher.

Nine of the 14 scholarship players from the 2023 roster who signed with other programs or made commitments have already done so through the site.

No transfers have made their decision to join the Buckeyes known to the public. That is anticipated to alter, though, when players reveal their selections for the NFL Draft and the roster becomes more apparent.
