NFL metes out draft punishment to 49ers for..

49ers sign running back Jeremy McNichols to practice squad for his third spell with team - A to Z Sports

The 49ers, who were fined by the NFL for payroll accounting mistakes at the end of the 2022 league year, will pick slightly later in the fourth round this year and will forfeit a fifth-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. For the draft this year, which takes place in Detroit from April 25–27, the penalty is just a slap on the wrist. The 49ers received compensatory choices at No. 136 and were forced to pick at the very end of the round rather than at No. 131 overall. Next year, it hurts a little more since they have to sacrifice a fifth-round choice. “This action resulted from a league review that found administrative payroll accounting errors at the close of the 2022 league year that resulted in a misreporting of the club’s cumulative player compensation,” Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesperson, wrote in an email. “The NFL determined that the club would have remained under the salary cap at all times regardless of the error and there was no intent to circumvent the cap.” Starting with the No. 31 overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft, the 49ers have ten selections in this year’s draft. They have two picks in the sixth round and three picks in the fourth round, including No. 124, which they acquired from Dallas in exchange for quarterback Trey Lance.
