Mel Kiper mock draft: Giants swing a Round 2 deal for Bo Nix

In Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft covering two rounds, he made an interesting move for the New York Giants. In the first round, he had them selecting LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers at No. 6, following a trade that saw the Minnesota Vikings move up to No. 5 in a deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. This was a fairly standard pick.

However, it’s Kiper’s second-round choice for the Giants that stands out. He had them trading up 14 spots to No. 33, the first pick of Round 2, to snag quarterback Bo Nix from Oregon.

This move raised eyebrows, especially with Michael Penix Jr. of Washington still available. Kiper addressed this by pointing out that while Daniel Jones is set as the Giants’ starter for 2024, the team might consider moving on from him next offseason when his guaranteed money decreases. Given Jones’ challenging 2023 season that ended with a torn ACL in November, now could be the right time for the Giants to plan for the future at quarterback.

Nix has an impressive college record, having started 61 games between Auburn and Oregon and accumulating 15,352 passing yards. His performance notably improved in 2023, where he threw for 45 touchdowns with just three interceptions while completing 77.4% of his passes. However, the question remains about his arm strength and whether he can excel in the NFL. Nix was often tasked with quick throws around the line of scrimmage, relying on his receivers to make plays after the catch.

Kiper gave Nix a Round 2 grade, suggesting that a team in this range could fall in love with his potential. In this scenario, that team could very well be the Giants.
