Mel Kiper Jr sticking with this first-round pick for giants

The New York Giants possess a high pick in this year’s NFL Draft and numerous gaps to fill in their lineup. Nevertheless, they are expected to use their first-round pick on an offensive player to support their starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, who has faced challenges due to poor wide receiver and offensive line units. Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. consistently predicts the Giants will select receiver Rome Odunze with the sixth overall pick, a stance unchanged by recent events in free agency, according to his latest mock draft.

Despite some improvements in their receiving group with players like Darius Slayton, Jalin Hyatt, and Wan’Dale Robinson, the Giants lack a true No. 1 receiver who can dominate on the outside, a role Odunze could potentially fill with his scoring ability and size at 6-foot-3. Kiper Jr. also believes the Giants are committed to Jones for at least this season and won’t use their top pick on another quarterback, given the depth at the quarterback position in this year’s draft class.

While there have been speculations about the Giants considering trading up for a quarterback, Kiper argues that the risk is too high for a team heavily invested in Jones. The team’s commitment to Jones is reinforced by the extension he signed last year. Although there are discussions about the Giants possibly struggling and landing a top draft spot again next year, Kiper notes that the 2025 quarterback class isn’t as promising as this year’s.

Therefore, the most probable scenario for the Giants is to focus on adding a playmaker for Jones in the first round and potentially address the quarterback position on Day 2 of the draft. This approach allows the team to give a drafted quarterback time to develop while Jones and Drew Lock handle the quarterback duties, emphasizing the importance of selecting a player who can contribute immediately to the team.
