EFL club in ‘catastrophic’ peril release former £1m Aston Villa wonderkid…

Former Aston Villa defender Jacob Bedeau is one of 16 players who have departed Morecambe following the expiration of their contracts, leaving the club in a precarious position. The Morecambe board has expressed serious concerns in an open letter to owner Jason Whittingham, formerly of the now-defunct Worcester Warriors rugby union team, urging him to either invest in the club or sell it.

Morecambe finished the recent League Two season in 15th place with 61 points, comfortably above the relegation zone despite a three-point deduction for failing to pay players on time last August. The club is experiencing significant upheaval, with manager Ged Brannan departing to become assistant manager at Accrington Stanley and chief executive Ben Sadler moving to Walsall.

In the midst of this instability, Morecambe has released 12 players and seen four others reject contract offers, leading to a total of 16 departures. They have exercised a contract option on one player and secured a first professional deal for an academy graduate, leaving the club with just five senior players under contract.

Jacob Bedeau, who made 117 appearances for Morecambe since initially joining on loan from Burnley in January 2022, is attracting interest from League Two clubs and reportedly from teams in Scotland. The 24-year-old centre-half played 49 matches in all competitions last season.
