BREAKING: Chris Mbulu Cup charity game takes place this weekend

Ex-Shrimp Ntumba Massanka and Morecambe FC Director James Wakefield Speak on the Importance of the Fifth Annual Chris Mbulu Cup Charity Game

Manchester, UK – With just two days remaining until the fifth annual Chris Mbulu Cup charity game at Whalley Range FC, former Morecambe player Ntumba Massanka and Morecambe FC Director James Wakefield shared their thoughts on the significance of this event.

On Saturday, May 25, the fifth Chris Mbulu Cup will be held in Manchester to commemorate the life of Chris Mbulu, who tragically passed away in May 2020 at the age of 23, just four months after joining Morecambe FC. The event will feature a sponsored walk from Old Trafford to Whalley Range FC in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, culminating in a 90-minute match between a team of retired Premier League legends and the Chris Mbulu Trust.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Chris Mbulu Trust, which supports young people by providing guidance and assistance in their personal journeys.

Ntumba Massanka, who played for the Shrimps in 2016, expressed his enthusiasm for the event: “I’m really excited about Saturday’s game, as is everyone else involved. The main objective is to spread awareness about what we’re trying to do as a charity. This is the fifth annual game. When we first started this, we wanted to make sure we could always remember Chris every single year and make sure his memory isn’t forgotten. We thought, from the start, playing a football game would always be a fitting tribute to remember him by, and it’s great we’re onto our fifth year, hopefully there are many more years to come.”

Massanka also highlighted the family-friendly nature of the event and encouraged Morecambe fans to attend: “It’s well known I played for Morecambe as well as Chris, so it would be amazing to see as many Shrimps fans down at the game as possible. It’s such a special club, especially everything that happened with Chris, Morecambe FC and its supporters have really shown they’re really a family club, they don’t forget their own people. Morecambe FC have gone above and beyond for me and my family, so I’d absolutely love to see as many Morecambe fans as possible at the match on Saturday. For those who can’t be there, donations to the charity and to what we’re trying to do are gratefully accepted in memory of Chris and so we can try to help young people. That would be absolutely amazing.”

James Wakefield, Morecambe FC Director, emphasized the event’s significance: “The match on Saturday is a wonderful and fitting way to both remember Christian, and promote the fantastic Trust established by his family in his name to make a real difference to young people’s lives. I’d urge anyone, Shrimps fans or not, to get to the game, show support and enjoy what will be a cracking day for a great cause.”
