Young and modest, dedicated to Wrexham’s success

Luke Young, the captain of Wrexham, shrugs aside any notion that he is getting close to becoming a legend inside the team.

On Tuesday, Young made just his second start since September at MK Dons, bringing his total number of Wrexham appearances to 250.

Young is currently ranked one place ahead of Tommy Bamford, the club’s all-time best goalscorer and true icon, in the top 50 Wrexham appearance makers.

The 30-year-old midfielder stated, “All I want to do is give it my all to help the boys and help myself.”

“And I will stop at nothing to rebuild this football team. That’s the ultimate objective.

“However much or however little I have played, or I will play between now and the end of the season, I hope everyone knows that whenever I’m called upon that I will give everything that I can for the club.”

Three years later: the numbers behind the Wrexham takeover

born in Plymouth Playing on a stadium that would not seem out of place in the Premier League, Young participated in the full ninety minutes of action against League Two promotion rivals MK Dons.

Compared to his Wrexham debut in August 2018, when the team won 1-0 against Dover in the National League, the surroundings were considerably different.

Since then, he has had six different managers, won two player of the year and goal of the season awards, and, in May of last year, hoisted the National League Trophy with teammate Ben Tozer.

Young is among the select few players in the team who were there prior to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s 2021 takeover of Wrexham.

Despite playing over six years at the club and averaging over forty games a season, he has struggled to establish himself in Wrexham’s first League Two campaign since 2008.

“Of course, everybody wants to play and be a part of a club and be out on that pitch in the starting XI,” stated Young.

However, you must approach it with realism. We have an incredible team with guys who eventually definitely need to be playing at a higher level, and I obviously should be playing higher after spending the last six years in the National League and then getting promoted. I’m up against really good players that are in the same position as me.”

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said midfielders George Evans and James Jones suffered “quite serious” injuries following Tuesday’s 1-1 draw. Young will have the chance to add to his eight League Two starts this season while they are away.

“You’ve got to be patient, you’ve got to bide your time,” Young stated.

“Playing week in, week out would be lovely but you have got to ready to be called upon because all of a sudden things can change quickly in football.”

This season, Young has scored twice, and Parkinson has praised him for his assist at MK Dons.

“It just shows that you never know when you are needed and he is a great example to all players, young players coming into the game,” Parkinson stated.

“There are moments when being on the bench or not playing may demoralize you. But you’re prepared to seize the opportunity when it presents itself.”
