According to a report by the Barnsley Chronicle, MK Dons boss Mike Williamson is not a primary candidate for Barnsley’s search for a new permanent manager. Although Alan Nixon had linked Williamson with the Oakwell position on his Patreon page, it seems Barnsley, currently a League One side, are considering other options.
Barnsley parted ways with Neill Collins late last season, appointing Martin Devaney as caretaker manager. Devaney led the team to the play-offs, but they were defeated in the semi-finals by Bolton Wanderers.
The Barnsley Chronicle recently reported that Williamson is no longer a frontrunner for the role. Instead, Daniel Stendel, currently at Hannover 96 in Germany, is being considered for the vacancy.
Barnsley is expected to undergo significant changes this summer, and the new head coach will face a challenging task. Several players, including Herbie Kane, Jordan Williams, and Devante Cole, are nearing the end of their contracts, and loanees Liam Roberts and John McAtee have returned to their parent clubs.
Williamson joined MK Dons in October when they were 16th in League Two. He improved the team’s performance, leading them to the play-offs, though they were ultimately defeated by Crawley Town. Before his managerial career, Williamson played as a defender for several clubs including Southampton, Wycombe Wanderers, Watford, Portsmouth, Newcastle United, Wolves, and Oxford United. He began his managerial career at Gateshead, where he achieved promotion from the National League North before moving to MK Dons.
For Barnsley, making the right managerial appointment is crucial for their promotion ambitions. Williamson might benefit from another year with MK Dons to continue his work there, while Stendel, with previous experience at Barnsley, seems a more suitable candidate for the role.
