A look ahead to MK Dons’ clash with Mansfield Town

A preview of MK Dons versus Mansfield Town

When MK Dons and Mansfield Town cross paths at Field Mill on Saturday, there might be a terrible feeling.

Since their “winner gets promoted” match in May 2019, the two teams have not seen each other. David Wheeler’s header in the second minute was sufficient to give Dons the victory and a position in League One, guaranteeing the Stags a play-off spot. At the conclusion, there were also obscene situations involving the supporters as the Dons celebrated their ascent.

Mansfield has subsequently stayed in League Two, but Dons nearly made it to the Championship before dropping back to the fourth division the previous season.

Mansfield is currently ranked fourth in League Two, but they have recently struggled, going winless in their previous eight games across all competitions. In contrast, Dons have won every away game since August, when they defeated Salford City 4-2. This is their first win in League Two since Mike Williamson took over the team in August.

Up to five players on the Mansfield team had previously played for MK Dons, so it will also be a reunion for some of them. Nigel Clough’s team might field George Williams, Jordan Bowery, Hiram Boateng, Stephen Quinn, and Bailey Cargill.

The teams have faced off in six prior meetings, with the promotion match serving as the most recent. Mansfield has only won once, at home against Dons in August 2006, in their first meeting between the two teams. Dons have won three of the games and drew two.

Ben Toner, the referee, will officiate the match. He has booked 72 people in 14 games this season, but he hasn’t let his red card slip. The last time Toner managed the Dons was during the 2-2 draw with Cheltenham Town at Stadium MK in April, when he managed Alfie May’s stoppage time equalizer. Declan Ford, the Fourth Official, will run the lines with Daniel Woodward and Stephen Wade.

Bookies put Mansfield at 10/11 and the draw at 11/4, with Dons at 11/4 to win the match.
