The Minnesota Vikings have a tough situation when dealing with QB Kirk Cousins.
The man has spent six years with the team and has led the team to fairly successful seasons, but he hasn’t been able to bring a Super Bowl to the team. While it’s hard to identify the exact reason for these shortcomings, it’s clear that his stint with the team hasn’t come with any silverware.
For a team like the Vikings who are hungry for a Super Bowl, it’s high time for them to consider whether Cousins is still the right man who can take them forward. One analyst believes it’s probably time for them to move on from their QB and start anew.
Analyst believes circumstances will have the Minnesota Vikings looking elsewhere at QB
ESPN’s Kevin Seifert listed three reasons why the Vikings will not likely be able to keep Cousins and will have to look for a replacement to lead them through 2024.
The first reason for Cousins’ possible departure from the Vikings has something to do with his previous contract. They had to sign the 35-year-old QB before free agency opens if they were to have any shot of keeping him.
The second reason is the amount of interest around him. The Atlanta Falcons haven’t been shy about their desire to bag Cousins and will be willing to give him the money he wants to get from his current team.
However, it’s the final reason that puts a deadline on Kirk Cousins’ stint as a Minnesota Vikings QB:
At every step of his career, Cousins has made the decision to maximize — or nearly maximize — his contractual return. His single-minded pursuit has delivered $230 million in earnings since he became a full-time starting quarterback in 2015, a period during which he has made three playoff appearances and compiled a 1-3 postseason record.
No matter what the Vikings might offer him before March 13, would it be enough to convince him to not explore the Falcons’ option or hear out any other team that might be interested?
Cousins is one of the best QBs that would hit free agency if the Vikings fail to give him a contract. While his 2023 season was cut short, he did put up an impressive tally of 2331 passing yards and 18 passing touchdowns.
With the circumstances surrounding the two parties, maybe it is time for a parting of ways that will help them edge closer to a Super Bowl title.
