In today’s college football, having a top-notch signal-caller is often the difference between winning and losing. The top teams need their quarterback to make next-level throws. Without them, that game usually goes down as a loss.
After watching Miami quarterback commitment Luke Nickel go off during the Battle Miami seven-on-seven tournament, it’s hard to imagine he’s not going to one day be a critical part of the Hurricanes’ offense putting up big numbers and getting wins.
He absolutely shredded defenses. After helping Cam Newton’s C1N team win the tournament, he took a few minutes to discuss why he chose the Canes and what he has done to become the player he is now.
“Yeah, he’s a special person,” Nickel began about Miami head coach Mario Cristobal. “Our relationship is special. Being with him and building a relationship with him…You gotta have a relationship with him to experience it (Miami). Our relationship is really tight right now, and I’m really looking forward to keep building it and forming it even more.”
Cristobal was a prime reason Nickel decided to jump on board with Miami, and so was this next coach that Nickel discusses.
“I’m super thankful that he came to my attention,” Nickel smiled and said about offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. “I just have so much trust and confidence that he’s the right person for this job.
“I know that when I picked this school that this is going to be the spot for me. I’m just ready to get to Miami and get to work.”
As for specifically why he is committed to Miami, here’s Nickel’s point of view.
“Just the trust I have in the coaching staff. I know we’re going to bring it back to the glory days. And I am super excited about what we’re doing at The U!”
Nickel is ready to be in Coral Gables but he’d like to bring some top prospects with him, too.
“(Orlando (Fla.) Jones receiver) Vernell Brown III, (Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin receiver) Jaime Ffrench, and even (IMG Academy receiver) Winston Watkins on my team, (Milton (Ga.) High School receiver) CJ Wiley, I mean, the list goes on and on with so many kids at this tournament. Shout out to Battle for hosting such a great tournament.”
There’s also the training that Nickel has been going through with Newton and he’s very high on what he’s learned, giving his mentor props.
“Me and coach Cam, I mean I’ve been with him for three years now. I feel like just the bond that we have has grown so much. And the trust he has for me, just for me to go out and do my thing each and every tournament is unbelievable.”
Now, here’s how Nickel defines his own game, beginning with the range that he throws the football the best.
“I’m a medium type of guy. I feel like my accuracy, I’d say, is top-notch. Don’t get me wrong, I like throwing the deep ball. But I think my best thing is the intermediate game and just find a way to get the ball to my receivers.”
The future Cane also knows there is more to learn.
“Just keep improving my knowledge of the game, learning coverages and all that stuff. Knowing where to go with the ball. Just keep improving that and getting ready for the next level.”
Speaking of going to college, there are still schools attempting to change Nickel’s mind.
“Oregon, Southern California, Georgia, Georgia Tech, but, 100% locked in with the Canes. Ready to move forward.”
As for Nickel’s recruiting ranking, he also had some thoughts on that as well, with Rivals being the only network currently placing him as a 4-star and everyone else at a 3-star.
“I think I’m a little underrated. But I’m not really worried about it too much. I know I’m better than a 3-star, but it doesn’t matter to me.”
