Mike McDaniels has spent most of his life involved with football.
Many football fans recognise him as the Miami Dolphins’ head coach, but for a long time, Mike McDaniel stood on the sidelines, hoping for the opportunity to work in the sport he loved.
McDaniel grew up watching the Denver Broncos practise as his mother, Donna, worked as a fillet saleswoman.
He was only ten years old at the time, but witnessing players like John Elway and Steve Atwater on a regular basis instilled in him the desire to pursue a career in football.
He eventually worked as a ball boy with the Broncos after contacting coach Mike Shanahan and requesting work.
A missing hat led to much more.
But one day, when attempting to obtain a second autograph from a player, he misplaced his hat, and the impact was felt by some of the coaches and players. Gary McCune, the Broncos’ video coordinator, felt awful for McDaniel and brought a replacement to camp, giving it to Mike a few days later.
When Donna picked up her son after practice that day, he informed her that a coach had given him a new hat, prompting her to wonder why a grown man would buy her son a present. She eventually met McCune, who explained his motives for the purchase, and after a few dates, they decided to get together and later married.
Living in an analyst’s house influenced McDaniel, who got preoccupied with offensive line depth charts. When he went to Yale with the intention of playing in college, he rapidly recognised that it was not his calling and shifted his focus to video analysis.
After graduation, McDaniel informed his mother that he had finally decided what he wanted to do next: become a football coach. Shanahan remembered McDaniel when he was employed as an intern for the Broncos in 2005, 12 years after he had arrived to be cared for as a small boy.
