According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, Memphis wants to hang onto Smart.
“The Grizzlies, sources said, have no interest in parting with Marcus Smart,” Fischer stated.
There are still two years left on Smart’s current $76.4 million contract. Having played with some of the best players in the NBA for the most of his career, he has experience playing with elite talent. He makes sense playing next to an offensive-minded guard like Ja Morant because of his adaptable defence.
Furthermore, with Smart in the lineup, defensive coordinator Taylor Jenkins may add new wrinkles to his scheme. He is the first guard to take home the defensive player of the year trophy since Gary Payton.Among the rare backcourt players that can switch from one to five positions on the court is him. In addition, he has significantly increased his outside shooting, which makes him a trustworthy alternative as a threat to catch and shoot.
