“It works in England,” says a former NRL forward on promotion and relegation.

It really works in England": Former NRL forward reveals opinion on promotion and relegation - NRL News - Zero Tackle

In Australia, the idea has been proposed previously.

Former forward Junior Moors of the Featherstone Rovers, the Wests Tigers, the Melbourne Storm, the Castleford Tigers, and the Penrith Panthers has stated he doesn’t think promotion and relegation is a realistic idea in Australian rugby league.

As clubs go up and down the ranks, the idea is successfully applied in England, keeping games competitive when they otherwise wouldn’t be.

The NRL struggles with a number of dead-rubber games towards the end of seasons, but Moors said he doesn’t think the idea would work in Australia because second-tier teams aren’t prepared to move up. Moors was speaking on Rugby League Outlaws Super Duper Saturday.

“If there were enough teams qualified to compete in the NRL, it would be feasible. I believe there isn’t,” Moors said to the program.

“In my opinion, the teams below lack the facilities and other necessary skills to compete in the NRL.

“It would be beneficial if that were the case. I believe it works incredibly well in England because, now, if you finish in the top eight here and advance to the final few rounds of the season, you will play some meaningless matches. Watching it is just not necessary.

“It resolves that issue since, in England, teams at the bottom battle to avoid being relegated. At the end, there are two competitions, and each one is thrilling to witness. Its main appeal, in my opinion, is that, but practically speaking, I don’t think it would work in Australia.”In Australia, the idea has been proposed previously.
