Max Verstappen outgunned both Mercedes drivers at the Spanish Grand Prix with a commanding performance.
Max Verstappen has described James Allison’s suggestion that Red Bull’s latest upgrade package was a downgrade as ‘bulls***’ after winning the Spanish Grand Prix. The reigning champions may no longer have the outright fastest car, but the Dutchman remains the one to beat for McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari.
Heading into the Spanish GP, there was plenty of conversation about Red Bull’s regression relevant to their rivals. With nothing notable separating Verstappen and rival Lando Norris over the course of four races, Mercedes’ technical director Allison speculated that their latest upgrade package may be to blame.
“I guess as soon as there’s a decent range of cornering speeds, they’ll be useful again, but it does look as if their upgrade was a downgrade,” Allison said in Canada. “So fingers crossed that will really f*** them up,” he added, jokingly, before stating: “That makes life hard because the moment you stop trusting your tools, you have to backtrack, and you lose loads of time.”
However, Verstappen took exception to these comments after fending off the threat of Norris to win his seventh race of the year in Spain. “No, that’s really bulls***,” he told RacingNews365. “The car has really improved, but it may well be that the rest can simply make bigger steps than us.”
Verstappen’s boisterous response was matched in equal tone by his team principal. Christian Horner took great pleasure in rubbing salt in Allison’s wounds the race weekend prior after Verstappen led home Norris and Mercedes’ George Russell in Montreal.
