According to former Everton CEO Keith Wyness, Man City is now “on the table” for potential Premier League “expulsion” “for the first time” if they are found guilty of all 115 financial accusations.
Man City was accused in February of violating over a hundred financial fair play rules set forth by the tournament that date back to 2009.
Is Man City going to be kicked out?
Man City has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and promised to fight their case, but if proven guilty, the team may face a points punishment or possibly banishment from the league. The duration of this procedure is unknown; some reports indicate that it may take several more years.
Man City finished the previous season with a treble. They defeated Arsenal to win the Premier League for the sixth time in six years. They then triumphed over Inter Milan in the Champions League final and won the FA Cup. The team has expanded off the pitch as well, setting records for revenue the previous year.
The Premier League charges, which are backed by the club’s enormous wealth through owner Sheikh Mansour, are seen by many as a cloud over the club’s achievements.
This season, they have come under more scrutiny as Everton and, more recently, Nottingham Forest have been docked points for violating the FFP regulations.
Additionally, according to former Everton CEO Wyness, Man City may face “expulsion” if found guilty of all 115 allegations contained in the 52-page dossier outlining the conclusions and rationale for Nottingham Forest’s four-point reduction.
“I’ve noticed the word expulsion cropping up in the report from Nottingham Forest’s hearing for the first time,” Wyness said to Football Insider.
Additionally, the city must be recognising that for the first time.
“Given the gravity of what’s allegedly happened, expulsion does seem to be a possibility, but we don’t know yet, and they have every right to argue their case.
“We must start it sooner rather than later, even though we haven’t seen the evidence yet.”
“It gives the Premier League a somewhat ridiculous appearance.”
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke offered his thoughts on the matter, saying, “The Premier League are saying [to me] that Man City’s charges are a lot more complex than [Everton’s and Nottingham Forest’s].”
It may have been drawn out because Man City doesn’t appear to have been as cooperative as these other two clubs. The 115 accusations that loom over them are the elephant in the room.
The fact that nothing has been done to them while charges are being brought against Everton and Forest makes the Premier League appear somewhat ridiculous. Everton and Forest each have two, whereas City has 115.
Man City has dealt with UEFA in the past when it appeared like they would be barred from the Champions League for a few seasons. They battled that one, and they are currently battling the Premier League ones as well.
“Some decisions must be made for the benefit of the game.”
