Manchester City booked a mouthwatering date with Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final after sweeping aside Newcastle United.

The Blues flew into a 3-0 half time lead at the Etihad, having already beaten the Magpies 2-0 in the first leg in the north east. And although Newcastle improved after the break and pulled one back through Anthoy Elanga, City had more than enough to book a trip to Wembley.

Omar Marmoush, leading the line in place of the benched Erling Haaland, scored twice. The first via a fortunate rebound off Dan Burn and the second when he nodded in from a yard after Antoine Semenyo’s effort had caused problems in the visiting defence.

Tijjani Reijnders made it three and City threatened to run away with the contest but the visitors made a contest of it after the break but never threatened what would have been a sensational comeback.

Brace yourselves, Pep Guardiola may really be off this time. Any more leaps like the one that accompanied Manchester City’s third goal and the manager’s back is going to decide his future for him.

As it is, the sight of the 55-year-old twirling around his technical area and shaking his fists in joy at his 21-year-old Uzbek centre-back was a welcome reminder of the energy that is still alive and well at the Etihad. If Guardiola isn’t to see out his contract until 2027 – and it remains a big if – he will leave a squad that is good enough to compete for trophies.

City saved their best performance of the season for the first leg of this semi-final, holding their nerve in the north-east and then producing two moments of quality to take a 2-0 advantage. After Sunday’s collapse at Spurs though, there were more nerves than there should have been for the visit of Eddie Howe’s side.

Manchester City booked their place in the Carabao Cup final with a 3-1 win over Newcastle United. Holding a 2-0 lead from the first leg, the result was never in doubt from the moment Omar Marmoush netted in the sixth minute of the game.

Marmoush added another and Tijjani Reijnders also scored before half-time for a dominant City who had far too much for Eddie Howe’s visitors. Anthony Elanga did get one back in another second half that the Blues didn’t really turn up for, but the game was already won by that point.

Rayan Cherki impressed off the bench and Erling Haaland twice drew saves from Aaron Ramsdale as a triple change from Guardiola had the desired effect.City finishing the stronger and Haaland forces Ramsdale into another save as the Blues seek a fourthHaaland makes a fine run and Cherki splits the defence with a lovely weighted pass but Ramsdale is equal to Haaland’s angled drive

City keep the ball really well and eventually work a shooting chance for Marmoush but he fires high and wide.

We’re into the final 10 minutes and Newcastle, who rallied commendably in the early stages of this half, have just lost momentum and the game seems to be petering out a bitIt’s Elanga He has to score. One ball cuts through City’s backline and Barnes squares for Elanga but he screws his shot wide. Barnes may have been offside anyway but City cannot afford to be so generous at the back Cherki, Rodri and Haaland are all coming on as Newcastle have the ball in the net but it’s ruled out for a clear offside

City have lost their way a bit here.

Haaland has been sent for a bit of a warm up down the touchline and the Blues need something to reassert control of the contest.

It would still take something pretty remarkable for Newcastle to score four more but City need to be alertCity have signed a left-back and converted another player into a left-back and both were pretty dreadful there trying to stop Anthony Elanga. Tijjani Reijnders didn’t cover himself in glory either. It shouldn’t make any difference but it’s another second half that City have been poor inThat was dismal from a City point of view. Elanga collects the ball wide on the right, pretty much on the touchline, but drifts and weaves his way into the box and delivers a smart finish off Trafford’s far post

Newcastle wanted a penalty after Alleyne took a bad touch and Wissa went down far too easily. Play goes on and Reijnders should add a fourth but sidefoots wide.

VAR had a look and quickly decided that there wasn’t enough in the Alleyne tangleCity have still shown a few second-half nerves but Newcastle look like they’re gone. They’re 5-0 down on aggregate so you can see why but it is threatening to make this half a non-event. If they don’t compete, it will only get worse for them. City haven’t clicked into gear yet and Newcastle have certainly raised their level even if they don’t quite look like sparking what would be a sensational comeback Khusanov gives the ball away just outside the box and Wissa is through on goal but he shapes his shot horribly wide. Let off for City early in this second half

Max Alleyne is on for City, replacing Nathan Ake.

Newcastle make a couple of changes as welll, introducing Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa and Jacob Murphy.

Well that was about as perfect as it could have been.

City three up at the break and five up on aggregate. Even with a trend of poor second half showings that should be enough, shouldn’t it?!City have monstered Newcastle. One team has turned up for this semi-final and the other simply has not. As much of a nightmare it has been for Newcastle, City are in dreamland. Guardiola will want to keep it tight for 15 minutes after half-time to be wary of collapse, but after that he can basically bring on whoever he likes.City fans are singing about Wembley and Guardiola is set for his 22nd visit there in under 10 years in English football. It is an incredible record and City will be one game away from making more history for their manager – Guardiola is currently one of three to have won four league cups, alongside Sir Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough.Nunes turns away from Lewis Hall but can’t make his mind up where to pass and after two or three twists, he loses the ball, pulls back his man and is booked
