The Dodgers may consider a few other intriguing candidates to address their starting rotation problems while free agent Yoshinobu Yamamoto makes his decision. One player whose name has been in the news recently is Miami Marlins left-hander Jesus Luzardo.
Although he doesn’t appear to be a target for trade, Miami is getting attention from players all over the league. Although Yamamoto would be a fantastic addition to the Dodgers rotation, L.A. is holding out for him before making a move.
Insider for the Dodgers If LA misses out on Yamamoto, Doug McKain of dodgersnation.com thinks they should consider dealing for Luzardo.
If Yamamoto signs elsewhere, Luzardo would be a great consolation gift for the Dodgers. He would provide them with a left-handed starter in their rotation, something they do not currently have, plus he possesses electrifying stuff on the mound.
Luzardo made 32 starts with the Marlins in the previous season and had an ERA of 3.58. In 178.2 innings pitched, he struck out 208 batters with a 1.22 WHIP.
The fact that Luzardo is under team control for a number of years is one of the main advantages of signing him. It might make sense for the Dodgers to consider a deal because they enjoy having control over players.
McKain notes that a deal for Luzardo won’t be simple, either.
Luzardo would require a sizable prospect package to be acquired, but the Dodgers have one of the best farm systems in the league and the prospect capital to close a trade.
