Jurgen Klopp calls up 16-year-old pair for Liverpool training ahead of Burnley clash

Klopp has some personnel concerns going into Saturday’s 3 p.m. game against Burnley at Anfield, home of Liverpool.

Due to injuries, Dominik Szoboszlai and Thiago Alcantara will miss Liverpool’s games; Ibrahima Konate is suspended, and Conor Bradley is on compassionate leave.

For the match against the Clarets, the four players will be sitting on the sidelines alongside Joel Matip, Mohamed Salah, Stefan Bajcetic, and Kostas Tsimikas.

Even worse, Klopp acknowledged on Friday to the Liverpool media team that the Reds team is suffering from a “bit of a flu.”

Many youth players were seen with the seniors in the Reds’ most recent training session, which they released as images on Thursday.

Lewis Koumas, an attacker from the Liverpool academy who has been playing exceptionally well for the Reds’ young teams this season, was one of them.

Throughout his 14 Reds Under-18 and Under-21 games, the 18-year-old has 10 goals and 3 assists.

The son of former Wales international Jason Koumas, Koumas also made the matchday roster for Liverpool’s Europa League match against Union SG in December.

According to the Liverpool website, Koumas is a “talented attacker.” As an Under-11 player, he transferred from Tranmere Rovers to the Reds academy and has since risen through the levels at Kirkby.

Lewis Koumas, a Liverpool prospect, is “a really good footballer.”

During an interview with the Reds media team in November of last year, Liverpool youth manager Barry Lewtas heaped praise on Koumas.

“Lewis has really been fantastic for us,” Lewtas remarked. “He has excellent technique, is an aggressive player who approaches the game with energy, and loves to run in behind.”

He is an excellent football player. He is a terrific character who just gets on with things—he really does—and he has blended right in with the boys.

You mentioned Lewis the other day, but you forgot he’s still an U18 player. His playing has truly developed.

“I thought he was great for us against Barrow, playing against a senior backline, and the way he played and approached the game, he was an absolute nuisance for them.”

“I’m incredibly happy for Lewis. He is a player who has advanced significantly this year and has demonstrated good versatility when playing throughout the front line.
