‘They had nothing’ – Alan Shearer tears into Leeds after playoff final loss v Southampton

Leeds United have been torn into by Alan Shearer for their “really poor” attacking display in the playoff final clash with Southampton.

Daniel Farke’s side missed out on an immediate return to the Premier League as they were beaten 1-0 by the Saints on Sunday (26 May) to leave them stranded in the Championship for another season.

Although there was little to split the two sides for much of the game, Shearer was quick to criticise the Whites for their lack of attacking edge suggesting Leeds “had nothing” to play with upfront.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football (27 May, 33:00) he said: “I watched it all today and I thought they (Southampton” really deserved it, they were the better team.

“Leeds were really poor, they had nothing upfront and Southampton had Adam Armstrong. He was the difference, he had that one opportunity, stuck it away and Leeds didn’t have anything in return did they, Micah?”

Micah Richards replied: “No they didn’t have anything. I was surprised because, in the two-legged semi-finals, I thought they were brilliant. They just didn’t turn up.”

Will Leeds United sack Daniel Farke after playoff defeat v Southampton?

Farke’s Leeds United squad will know that they were nowhere near good enough on Sunday and the German will likely be scratching his head as to why his team were so far off of the pace, particularly in possession.

Having torn Norwich City apart last time out with some excellent attacking football which showed the best of the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, both players failed to even get involved in proceedings at Wembley.

If there was a game where the Whites just simply had to find a way to get over the line, it was this one and it will be incredibly disappointing for everyone involved at Elland Road that they have once again failed to put the finishing touches on a campaign.

Hopefully, Farke and his side will be able to keep some of their best talents beyond the end of the summer transfer window before preparing to push for the top two again this summer, but it won’t be easy to bounce back again.
