Leeds United left-back exits Elland Road, agrees terms in USA

Scott Godden has left Leeds United to join the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, a university varsity team in New Jersey, USA. His signing was announced on the official Rutgers X account.

At 19, Godden has never made a senior appearance for Leeds but will now continue his development in the United States after leaving the Whites.

The left-back participated in first-team training sessions earlier this year but had yet to break into the senior team.

Godden’s departure from Elland Road isn’t uncommon in itself.

Young talents at established professional clubs often feel their path to first-team football is blocked and seek opportunities elsewhere.

However, it is rare for them to join university teams in the USA.

Godden might have personal reasons for the move or has identified the USA as an ideal place to further his development, hoping to catch the eye of an MLS club if he performs well for his new team in New Jersey.

Junior Firpo and Sam Byram are currently ahead of him in the first-team pecking order at Leeds, with 20-year-old Leo Hjelde also closer to a breakthrough season. The Norwegian has already made eight first-team appearances, including three this season, totaling 180 minutes, before going on loan to Sunderland in the Championship, where he played 11 times. His CV also includes senior outings at Rotherham United and Ross County. In contrast, Godden has never gone out on loan or made a senior appearance at any professional level.

For Godden, leaving the club in search of new opportunities might be the best move for his career.
