It was reasonable to have misgivings about Mac Jones’ trade market after consecutive awful seasons for the Patriots.
Well, that was all New England needed to seal the deal—at least one team desired the 2021 first-round pick.
According to reports, the Patriots are completing a deal to send Jones to the Jaguars. Just minutes after his ESPN colleague Adam Schefter revealed the information, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler made an appearance on “SportsCenter” to explain why Jacksonville was interested in the divisive signal-caller.
“I just spoke with a member of the team to check in. According to them, this is only for a backup quarterback position,” Fowler remarked. Without a doubt, Trevor Lawrence is still the man. The fact that their regular backup, C.J. Beathard, has been hurt and bruised is one of the reasons. They are therefore attempting to find a healthy replacement for the No. 2 position for the time being.
Story continues beneath the pop-up.
Jones is expected to welcome his upcoming trade to the Jaguars, who finished 9-8 the previous two seasons. The native of Jacksonville, the Alabama product will now get the chance to work with head coach Doug Pederson, who has a superb offensive philosophy.
The 25-year-old won’t likely play much in 2024, but he will still have a chance to play with the Patriots again soon because Jacksonville will host New England at some point this season.
