Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson speaks with offensive coordinator Press.

Press Taylor was named the Jacksonville Jaguars’ full-time offensive coordinator last season. After mixed results, head coach Doug Pederson suggested resuming play-calling duties. However, he has yet to make a choice and has informed the local media that there is still plenty of time.

Pederson told reporters at rookie minicamp that they won’t play football until September, so there’s no urgency to make a decision. “Don’t play games until September, so got some time.”

Taylor will call offensive plays full-time starting in 2023, as announced prior to the season. He did it in the second half of several games the previous year. While he occasionally shown inventive game plans, he also made perplexing decisions. The most significant was that he abandoned the run and did not attempt to establish it at any point in the second half.

Furthermore, the Jaguars struggled to react when guys like Zay Jones and Christian Kirk were absent. Taylor’s offensive line was unable to block, limiting the types of plays he could call.

Last year, the Jaguars finished 17th in NFL points scored. For comparison, they ranked tenth the previous year, indicating a clear deterioration, which Taylor has been partially blamed for. Here’s Pederson’s entire media interaction.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson can take playcalling away from Press Taylor.

Doug Pederson could’ve left Press Taylor after 2023, but chose not to. Instead, he doubled his support. He admitted that Taylor could be better, but he said that it was understandable given that it was his first year in that role.

Trevor Lawrence expects Taylor to call plays next season. Having said that, the Jaguars could be better off with Pederson handling it.

In theory, giving Taylor more responsibility of the offence would allow Pederson to oversee other aspects of the squad. The method did not work and may have been detrimental. As previously stated, Taylor was not the only reason they took a step back, but he did not do a great job either. With Ryan Nielsen as defensive coordinator, Pederson can focus more on offence, his area of strength.

Nielsen, unlike his predecessor, Mike Caldwell, is a knowledgeable defensive coordinator with extensive experience. This could allow Pederson to focus more on the offence rather than the defence. Heck, it could be the entire reason of employing Nielsen.

In the end, head coach Doug Pederson must do what is best for his squad. If that means resuming playcalling duties, so be it. Then then, there is no necessity to hasten a decision.
