‘Wow’… Jeff Stelling reacts after what happened in Championship promotion race this weekend

The fact that Leicester City lost to Middlesbrough on Saturday might have given Leeds United, Southampton, and Ipswich Town a chance to take the top spot.

The Foxes are still leading the Championship by nine points, but they will be watching closely because the three teams behind them are winning consistently.

Tonight’s fixtures will see Southampton host Hull City and Ipswich take on bottom-of-the-table Rotherham United. Both teams have games in hand over the teams above them.

If Southampton wins, they will move up to second place, and Ipswich will draw even with Leeds in terms of points. A tenth straight victory would really break it wide, though, when Leeds hosts Leicester at Elland Road on Friday. That game is maybe the most important.

Jeff Stelling said on talkSPORT yesterday that he now sees a “glimmer of light” for the group of teams trailing Leicester to close the gap and overtake them.

Stelling’s response to Leicester’s loss

“I mean, Leeds and Southampton, wow!” he exclaimed. And Middlesbrough defeated Leicester. You simply wonder, “Is there even a tiny bit of hope for the chasers there?”

Any aspirations of either of the three teams closing the gap on Leicester ultimately probably depend on Leeds winning all three points from Friday’s crucial match.

The Whites would fall behind by 12 points with a defeat, which would be quite difficult considering how excellent Leicester has been for the majority of the season. They remain very much on track to surpass Reading’s previous high of 106 points.

Although there hasn’t been much separating Leicester from Leeds and Southampton over the previous 25 games, manager Enzo Maresca of Leicester admitted last week that their strong start has put them ahead of the competition thus far.

It’s likely that all three teams are aiming for second place for the time being, and things may become interesting if Leicester keeps losing.
