Town, who currently occupy the fifth spot in the league, are now separated from the leaders by 14 points.

Despite Town having more possession and playing better football, Pompey’s early long-range goal was enough to take them through.

“I believe that the game went as expected,” stated manager Sheehan.

“We were aware of the opponent we would face, and their goal inside 90 seconds dealt us a serious blow right away.

“After then, we were the only team left in the match, always attempting to win the ball and force events to happen.

“Give Portsmouth credit; they turned the second half to their advantage and stopped us just as we were getting the momentum.

“Our intent, our conviction to try and get back into it I can’t fault, just we didn’t quite have the end product to test the goal enough.”

“I don’t know where we are at, or how many points off we are,” Sheehan responded when questioned about Town’s chances of getting promoted.

“We will just keep going and try really hard to pick up as many points as we can and we will see where it leaves us.”

Maisy Barker, the right-back, was sidelined for Town due to an injury sustained during last week’s League Cup.

Sheehan went on, “She’s not in the best of places.

She’ll be absent for some time.

“We play a lot of physical opponents, but in the previous two games, we have played a great physical match against them.

“We deserved a little bit more than we have got.”

Next week, Town will visit Cheltenham Town in an attempt to overcome this setback.

“There are many positives and things for us to consider going into that game.

“We need to improve and show more clinical play in the last four.

“Be a bit more focused with our detail, and that will get us the chances that we couldn’t quite get today.”
