The attacking prowess of Suffolk Town over the past two seasons has garnered a lot of attention, but the Tractor Boys’ ascent to the Premier League is also being aided by some unsung heroes on the other end of the pitch.
No team has scored more league goals this season than the Suffolk team, who are led by Kieran McKenna and feature regular scorers in Conor Chaplin, Nathan Broadhead, and Kieffer Moore.

Burgess began his career with a string of loan stints for teams like Cheltenham Town, Oldham Athletic, and Bury after rising through the ranks at Fulham. In 2017, he made a permanent move to Scunthorpe United.
After spending three successful years at Glanford Park, including a brief loan at Salford City, he went on to further establish his reputation by joining Accrington prior to the 20–21 season and immediately becoming a valuable member of the defensive unit at the Wham Stadium.
Leif Davis is still a target for the Irons, who may submit a bid this summer.
In addition to being skilled at keeling the ball out of the net, Stanley was also a perfect fit for the style that manager John Coleman was employing at the time, which had Stanley concentrating on playing the ball out of the back and advancing it from defence.
Before the upcoming season, Ipswich became interested in him due to his comfort level with the ball and apparent ability to read defensive situations quickly. A reported £750,000 fee was sufficient to entice him away from the Lancashire side.
After just three seasons at the club, Burgess looked right at home at Portman Road, where he conceded fewer goals than any other team. Over his three years in Suffolk, he has since established himself as a mainstay in the first team.
It all came together for McKenna and his team the next season, when Town blasted through the third division, placing second behind Plymouth Argyle and earning their first trip back to the Championship in four years.

It would be simple to just concentrate on the boys in blue’s offensive output given their insatiable hunger for goals (101 in total), but their ability to easily thwart opposition attacks has likely played a major role in their dominance, as evidenced by the league-low 35 goals conceded.
Moving on to the Championship, Burgess has continued to maintain his upward trajectory in his career, playing admirably well in each of his 36 appearances. McKenna has never strayed from his tried and trusted main centre back while in the second tier.
The 28-year-old has been more than a match for every team he has faced this season, even with his improved quality. Woolfenden and Sam Morsy have given him plenty of assistance in keeping the ball out of the net.

This season, the large defender has led the way for his team in heroically blocking shots with his body. Of his 34 attempts on goal, none have found the back of the net, and his 170 clearances have also raised the bar for the Tractor Boys.
The defensive player truly shines when the ball is in the air; this season, the Australian won 144 aerial duals, more than twice as many as fellow centre back Woolfenden.
That defensive dominance is what has made Town such a formidable force in the second tier this season, and it allows those further forward to strut their stuff; a strategy that has proven successful time and again in 23/24.
Burgess will be remembered as one of the best pound-for-pound signings in the club’s history, with quality oozing from every pore every time he takes the pitch for the Suffolk side.
