Defender unavailable for Boro visit but McKenna hopes for ‘fresher’ squad

Kieran McKenna, the manager of Ipswich Town, has stated that George Edmundson will be absent for the upcoming match against Middlesbrough due to an ankle injury he sustained during Tuesday’s match against Watford at Portman Road. Edmundson, who is 26 years old, was forced off the pitch with 10 minutes remaining in the game after going down earlier. This was his ninth appearance and eighth start of the season for Ipswich Town. McKenna expressed hope that the injury will only be temporary.

“George Edmundson won’t be participating in tomorrow’s game against Middlesbrough,” stated McKenna. “Fortunately, it doesn’t appear to be a severe injury, but there is swelling in the ankle, so he won’t be able to play.”

McKenna acknowledged Edmundson’s significance to the team, noting, “He’s been a crucial part of the squad and has stepped up when needed. This kind of depth is crucial for success. Ideally, every team would want four solid centre-backs, and we’ve felt confident in our options throughout the season.”

“He’s been an important player for us. He’s come back from a big operation in the summer, it’s been a good season.

“Of course, he would’ve liked to have played more, which is natural for every player, he’s trained well, shown a real maturity in how he’s gone about his business and he’s stepped in at important times for the team.”

Goalkeeper Cieran Slicker is also unavailable tomorrow’s match after he rolled his ankle, but McKenna stated the injury does not look like it will be long-term.

Henry Gray, who was recalled from his loan spell at Chelmsford earlier this week, will be with the squad.

The Town boss, recently awarded as the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month for March, made four alterations to his starting line-up for the Watford match due to what he described as a “stretched” squad.

He explained, “The hope is that those who didn’t start on Wednesday will be fresher and ready to come back into the team for the next game. That’s one of the reasons we rotate the squad when necessary.”

Additionally, he mentioned, “We have a few other minor concerns that will be evaluated on the day of the game.”

“We know it’s the last game of the busy block, we’ve got two weeks off after this game so the boys are in good spirits and determined to leave it all out on the pitch tomorrow.”

If league-leaders Leicester City drop points in their clash relegation-threatened Plymouth tonight (Friday), Town will have the opportunity to climb back to the top of the table with a win over Michael Carrick’s side (3pm).
