Chelsea in talk to replace Mauricio Pochettino with Kieran McKenna as he leaves by mutual consent

Brighton are also keen on appointing the Ipswich Town manager who has led the club back to the Premier League

Mauricio Pochettino has left Chelsea by mutual consent after one season as manager.

Chelsea is gearing up to compete with Brighton for the appointment of Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna following the mutual agreement to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino, who guided the team to sixth place after a strong finish to his sole season in charge, has departed after discussions with co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, as well as co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali over two days.

The split reportedly stems from a divergence in strategy between Pochettino and Chelsea. Despite being on a two-year deal since last summer, Pochettino was reportedly frustrated with the lack of influence and was unable to negotiate more power. Consequently, it was decided to terminate the relationship to avoid potential conflicts in the upcoming season.

While there was some backing for Pochettino at the board level, it was not unanimous, with Eghbali reportedly showing lukewarm support for the former Tottenham manager.

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital acquired Chelsea two years ago, the club has aimed to operate collaboratively and seek a young, forward-thinking coach willing to align with their approach.

McKenna, who played a key role in Ipswich’s remarkable promotion to the Premier League, is now a frontrunner. Although Brighton is interested in the 38-year-old from Fermanagh to replace Roberto De Zerbi, Chelsea’s ongoing discussions with his representatives have slowed down Brighton’s efforts to secure a deal.

Other contenders include Thomas Frank from Brentford, Míchel from Girona, and Sebastian Hoeness from Stuttgart. Despite Burnley’s relegation, Vincent Kompany is also being considered. Concerns exist that Sporting Lisbon’s Rúben Amorim may not fit the squad’s tactical profile, while interest in De Zerbi has waned.

Stewart and Winstanley expressed gratitude to Pochettino for his service and wished him well. In response, Pochettino thanked the Chelsea ownership group and sporting directors for the opportunity.
