With a strong start to the 2023–24 season, the Houston Rockets gave their supporters hope that their years of being a bottom-feeding team were coming to an end. After going on a six-game winning streak that boosted their record to 6-3, the Rockets went on a five-game winning streak that improved their standing to 13-9.

Since then, the Rockets have gone 12-23, putting an end to all of the fan anticipation and hope. Furthermore, since the Rockets are currently 4.5 games behind the 10th-seeded Golden State Warriors, who seem ready for a run, all talk of the team qualifying for the play-in tournament has also halted.

The best chance the Rockets have is to hope, as we have seen in recent years, that the Los Angeles Lakers flame out. LeBron James is still a member of the team, though.

He and Anthony Davis will use every effort to secure a second championship run. Furthermore, the Rockets will still need to catch up to them even if they fail. That seems like a lofty objective based on what we’ve seen from the club.

Since the All-Star break, the Rockets have a 1-2 record and are ranked 24th in terms of both offensive and net rating. And that defense that was the league’s top defensive unit once? It is now ranked 20th.

Additionally, the team’s long-range shooting ranking is 26th, which has been difficult all season.

Could there have been a way to stop this slump? Indeed.

Let’s examine two choices that have caused the team’s season-long problems.
