NBA News: Rockets Coach Ime Udoka On Alperen Sengun: 'He's Very Unique And It's A Luxury To Have A Guy Like Him'
During their conversation, Kelly Iko of The Athletic questioned Ite Udoka, the head coach of the Houston Rockets, about Alperen Sengun.
In his rookie campaign with the Rockets, Udoka has taken pleasure in mentoring Sengun.
It’s been fantastic, Udoka remarked. “Well, in terms of scoring, I’ve had a lot of high scorers in the past. Naturally, I collaborated with Joel (Embiid), Tim Duncan, and Marcus Aldridge. Throughout my career, I have coached or played with a number of low-post scorers. But Joel is the only other player that somewhat resembles him in terms of style and positioning on the court. Joel has improved as a passer, but even with that, he is not quite as good as Alperen was when I had him.
However, he is extremely special, and having a man like him who you can move about the court and do a lot of things with is a privilege. He and the squad will have more space on the field as his shooting gets better. The issue is that we need to recognize how teams are pursuing (Şengün) and adapt accordingly. Since there aren’t many post scorers in the league and he had a great start, teams have been concentrating on getting rid of him and forcing us to show it from three, to be honest. Essentially, it’s about how he grows and adapts to the success he’s had so far this year, as well as our ability to place him in better circumstances.
Sengun is shooting 53.7% from the field, 28.7% from beyond the arc, and 70.6% from the free-throw line while averaging 20.8 points, 9.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.7 blocks for the Rockets this season.
Sengun, who is 21 years old, has one triple-double and 27 double-doubles.
According to Udoka, “it’s still because of his passing ability and the crowd he draws.” “He can start plays offensively in the post, up top, or at the free-throw line. He can pass, thus you can still move past him. Our reads need to pick up a bit sometimes, and the young players will always try to beat the double team rather than setting up an easy pass and baiting the play. However, we still have the option to offend him. He’s an additional asset due to his scoring and passing prowess, which doesn’t detract from the team element. He can score in a variety of ways, including solitary post-ups, pick-and-rolls, off-ball activities, and more. As long as we find our spacing and he makes the appropriate pass, read it, and use himself as bait to dribble for teammates to get open shots or sprint quickly to beat a double team.
This summer, Sengun may sign a rookie-scale contract extension with the Rockets. Sengun is expected to sign a lucrative NBA deal during the offseason.
Sengun, a native of Giresun, averages 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists over his career. He is one of the NBA’s up-and-coming talents.
