Alperen Sengun’s surprise injury update that could impact Rockets’ playoff hopes

The Rockets will undoubtedly be interested in this latest injury report, even if it was once thought that Alperen Sengun would be sidelined for the whole season.

The Houston Rockets have improved this season, but many fans believed their hopes of making the playoffs were gone when it was revealed that Alperen Sengun had sprained his ankle in their victory over the Sacramento Kings on March 10 and would probably miss the remainder of the regular season. Sengun’s season may not be over yet, however.Sengun’s ankle was sprained in Grade 3, which is a highly significant injury that requires time to heal. Though the Rockets are now only 2.5 games behind the Golden State Warriors for the tenth seed in the Western Conference, there’s a chance Sengun could return if Houston is still in the running by the time he is healthy to play. At the time, it seemed like the Rockets weren’t in the conversation for a potential playoff spot.

Sengun’s comeback during the regular season is conceivable but not certain. It’s clear that he was spared a serious damage when he was harmed, but his ankle was still severely sprained. Since they would have nothing to play for, we sort of expected he would be done for the season.

I was informed there was a very real possibility that it would come down to ‘Hey, does it make sense to bring him back?’ late in the regular season. Is he medically certified, which is clearly going to be the most important thing? However, they are positioning themselves so that they have an opportunity to play for something, because they are not going to bring him back if they are not doing so. – Brian Windhorst, Tim MacMahon, and The Hoop Collective

Alperen Sengun has a chance to make a comeback with the Rockets this season.

Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun (28) reacts during the second quarter against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center.
Sengun’s breakthrough season (21.1 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 5 APG, 53.7 FG%) was a major factor in the Rockets’ surprising success this season, which has left many fans bewildered. This club seemed doomed without him, but they have won their past four games and are now on a six-game winning streak that has put them back in the running for a West Play-In position.

It would be senseless to bring him back if Houston isn’t going to have a shot to reach the playoffs. However, it seems that the Rockets may think about bringing their star center back a little sooner than anticipated if Sengun is cleared and the team survives. Naturally, everything will rely on how his squad does going ahead without him.

After Sengun’s injury, it wouldn’t have been too brave to write the Rockets off, but it seems that his team’s early success without him has opened the way for him to perhaps return this season. It remains to be seen if Houston can win without him, but you can be sure Sengun will do all in his power to return to the court this season, should he get the opportunity.
