Theatregoers at Edinburgh Playhouse caught up in “absolutely disgusting behaviour” as Hearts and Hibs fans battle

Edinburgh Playhouse theatre goers caught up in "absolutely disgusting behaviour" as Hearts and Hibs hooligans clash

Before last night’s Edinburgh derby, Hearts and Hibs fan bases clashed outside the city center theater, forcing theatergoers waiting in line to see Wicked at the Playhouse to rush inside.

One of the spectators who saw the ugly scenes as the supporters of the rival Edinburgh teams hurled objects, including bottles, at one another, called it “absolutely disgusting behavior.”

The anonymous theatergoer informed the Evening News of the altercations outside the Greenside Place theater at approximately 6:25 p.m. on the eve of the Hearts vs. Hibs game at Easter Road. The game began at 8 p.m. and ended with a 1-0 victory for Hearts, thanks to a late goal by Lawrence Shankland.

“Bottles and missiles were flying everywhere, from the other side of the street to the Playhouse,” he declared. It was necessary to hastily us usher my spouse, our daughter and granddaughter, and the other individuals in line inside the theater where they were anticipating the screening of Wicked.

“Very repulsive behavior that is unlikely to receive much media attention. Please draw attention to this; I’m very upset and furious. When she ought to be able to continue being thrilled to see a theater production she has been anticipating for months, my granddaughter has been reduced to tears and fear.

The grandfather commended the Edinburgh theater staff for their quick thinking in evacuating terrified theatergoers and called on the Scottish football authorities to take action.

“Both sets of fans should receive reprimands from the SPFL, and the clubs should receive fines,” he declared. The Playhouse’s security team deserves praise for ushering patrons inside for their safety. After the show, the fans had already left, so I managed to get my family home without incident, but what a terrible start to what ought to have been an enjoyable evening for everyone at Wicked.”

Although the incident was confirmed, a Police Scotland spokeswoman was unable to confirm that the individuals involved in the horrifying incident were Hearts and Hibs supporters at this time. She stated: “Police were notified of a disturbance on Greenside Place in Edinburgh at approximately 6:25 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27. When the officers arrived, the group broke up. Investigations are underway to determine the complete circumstances.

A request for comments has been made to the Edinburgh Playhouse. Hearts and Hibs turned down the chance to comment on the event.
