Nick Montgomery and Martin Boyle share management and players’ perspectives during an acrimonious meeting at Hibs.

After losing badly to St. Mirren, Hibs supporters might use anything to boost their spirits, so they might be happy to learn that the players and coaching staff held a heated post-mortem.

The Hibees’ strong start under Nick Montgomery has since faded, but their worst performance to date came in the first half when they trailed the Saints three goals when it could have been even more. After the game, the manager expressed regret to the fans and asked for time and patience to make things right.

That doesn’t mean, however, that he wasn’t upset, and he told his players as much during the team meeting a few days later. In the meanwhile, time hadn’t shown to be a healer, and the Englishman acknowledges that many raised their voices at the players as he made his comments.

“I’m an intense individual who puts my emotions on display. Whether I was a manager or a player, I was a fierce rival. In this league, the most important thing is to compete. Since it’s a physical league, competition is your primary priority.

Yes, we have talented players, but it will be challenging if you can’t match the opposition’s intensity and give up goals that aren’t good. Both the new lads and the boys who have been here for a while have a learning curve.

Although Martin Boyle wasn’t at the game, he returned in time for it after playing for Australia in the Asian Cup.

Giving a player’s perspective inside look, he clarified: “Much like you imagine! It lacked beauty. I didn’t play the game, so I couldn’t really have much of an opinion. I was more or less an observer.

“It’s fine that there was a slight escalation in temper; you need to have those conversations and work them out. And it’s time to leave again as soon as you exit this building.

“Over the years, I’ve attended a lot of meetings similar to that one, and you just have to accept it.” You must undo the errors we committed. They all pretty much took that on the chin, knowing full well that the performance was unsatisfactory.

“You watch the video, listen, and at the conclusion, there are some comments; the discussion is open. It can go wrong sometimes and go really well other times, but that’s football. We need to make a change.
