HIBERNIAN LOANEE SCORES HIS THIRD SEASON GOAL IN A STORMING WIN FOR BELEAGUERED OOSTENDE

Rumors circulated throughout the week that Oostende’s Challenger Pro League matchup against promotion-chasing Zulte Waregem would not take place because of their present financial problems. Ultimately, the team at the bottom of the table had an opportunity to attempt and reclaim some of the points that they had lost as a result of point deductions.

In what has been an awful season thus far, the team from the coast gave their supporters a rare moment of happiness despite the overwhelming odds against them. Ewan Henderson, a midfielder for Hibs on loan from Scotland, gave the squad a strong start by netting his third goal of the year to make it 1-0. Daniel Perez, a loanee from Club Brugge, made it 2-0.

Veteran forward Jelle Vossen scored a penalty kick to make it 2-1 just before halftime, and he added an equalizer immediately after. In the 92nd minute, Zulte Waregem’s new acquisition, Anthon Tanghe, was sent off on his debut, as they attempted to win. Ironically, the central defender had left Oostende to join Zulte Waregem during the current transfer window. But Oostende failed to score from the next penalty deep into additional time.

But they had one more opportunity. With a man advantage, Oostende won it late thanks to Mohamed Berte.

The 21-year-old, who has three goals and three assists this season, is doing well despite the team’s difficulties. At least for this weekend, their supporters may rejoice in a thrilling triumph even though the team is still at the bottom and in danger of being extinct.
