CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Sky have parted ways with head coach Tyler Marsh following a challenging 2025 season marked by an eight-game losing streak, the team announced on August 3. Marsh, hired in November 2024 after a successful stint as an assistant with the Las Vegas Aces, led the Sky to a 13-27 record in his first season. Despite high expectations for a roster featuring young stars Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, the team struggled with consistency and failed to secure a playoff spot.
The decision comes as the Sky aim to regain their competitive edge after missing the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Marsh, 37, brought a player development background, having contributed to back-to-back Aces championships in 2022 and 2023. However, fans and analysts criticized his in-game adjustments, particularly during third-quarter collapses, as noted in a recent Reddit discussion. General Manager Jeff Pagliocca emphasized the need for a new direction, stating, “We are committed to building a championship-contending team and believe this change aligns with our vision.”
Assistant coach Sydney Johnson has been appointed interim head coach. Johnson, who joined the Sky’s staff in 2025, brings experience from her time as an assistant at Princeton and in the WNBA. The Sky hope Johnson can stabilize the team as they prepare for the 2026 season, with focus already shifting to the upcoming WNBA Draft and free agency.
Star rookie Angel Reese expressed mixed emotions, having previously supported Marsh’s hiring. “It’s tough, but I’m ready to work with Coach Johnson,” Reese posted on X. The Sky’s front office now faces pressure to find a permanent coach to lead their talented young core back to playoff contention.
