BRAEKING Jack Brydon, defender for Queen of the South, says Marvin Bartley is a godsend as a fit stopper again. Scottish Cup shock

Marvin Bartley was a member of the Hibs team that provided Jack Brydon with his most memorable moment as a fan. As he looks to make a run in the national competition as a player, the Queen of the South defender is now hoping his coach can work some of that Scottish Cup magic on the Doonhamers.

In 2016, Bartley was a substitute as Hibs won the trophy for the first time in 114 years. Twelve-year-old Brydon was a Hibees enthusiast, cheering on his team from the Hampden stands as they put on an incredible late show to defeat Rangers. After eight years, the couple wants to create lasting memories with Queens.

And there’s a calm confidence that they could surprise St. Mirren again this afternoon after routing Dundee United in the previous round. “To have Marvin Bartley as my manager now is brilliant,” said Brydon, who was signed by Bartley last January from Hibs’ youth ranks. “I grew up a Hibs fan and Marvin Bartley was a key man in that team.”

“When my dad took me to Hibs games, Marvin was the midfield spoiler. The Scottish Cup Final in 2016 was the best moment by far. Even though I was only twelve, it was amazing to watch them raise the cup at Hampden with my friend. It’s odd because I had never met the manager before he contacted me to sign me last January, even though he was clearly in that squad. But I had spent years watching him perform. At Queens, I now have a great relationship with him.

He has given me a fresh perspective on how to defend and make it easier for me. When it comes to games, I prefer to be very clear about my role and where the ball is on the pitch.

“He gave me clear instructions, and I’ve made an effort to heed them. My injuries have kept me from playing as much, but perhaps he will still trust me to finish the job when I’m well again.

After missing three months due to a ruptured ankle ligament, Brydon is back in the lineup, but in the previous round, Queens stunned United in a Palmerston penalty shootout. Brydon had to watch from the stands.

However, the 20-year-old’s confidence skyrocketed after the outcome, as he stated: “Nobody gave us a chance against Dundee United.” They pounded us in the opening fifteen minutes as I was watching from the stands.

“I believe that Daniel Church, Harry Cochrane, and I were in the stands kicking every ball.” We covered our eyes when it came to penalties. Everyone was risking their lives, and if we want to create a stir at St. Mirren, we need to put on a similar kind of show.

“We can cause them problems because we have a strong team and we know they have good players.” Simply put, I’m thrilled to be back on the team. Three months has been a long time. At first, I believed I had broken my ankle. There was a snap that I heard. The entire length of my leg was covered with black and blue. I was unable to see my calf!

What a game it is to return. If I receive the call to go, I’m sure I’ll start on the bench, but I can’t wait to feel the rush and butterflies all over again.
