David Marshall reveals only reason Scotland return would happen as Hibs keeper insists Euro 2024 hopes in safe hands

David Marshall would never say no to answering a Scotland SOS for goalkeeping before the European Championships this summer. However, the all-time leading Hibs player maintains that he intends to travel to Germany with the Tartan Army, not Steve Clarke’s team, as they attempt to create significant tournament history.

In recent months, Marshall’s club performance has drawn attention and sparked speculation about whether he will change his mind about retiring from international service. With his penalty save against Serbia, the 38-year-old guaranteed Scotland’s place in the most recent European Championship, capping a 23-year absence from a major tournament. The next three games he was between the sticks. But after the Scots were eliminated from the World Cup a year later, the 47-time international goalie announced his retirement.

And he’s content to watch his nation attempt to make it to the elimination rounds for the first time from the stands. Furthermore, he maintains that with the current collection of shotstoppers at Clarke’s disposal, Scotland is in good hands. The new number one, Angus Gunn, is supported by Robby McCrorie, Zander Clark, and Liam Kelly.

After missing a year due to a double leg break, Craig Gordon has returned to the Hearts bench, which has put the seasoned goalkeeper in the mix.

“No, not at all!” he exclaimed. I will simply continue to play about here. I had a terrific time, but Hibs is the main focus.

“The guys were in there, and Angus did a great job filling in.” Of course, injuries are a another story altogether; they happen when they do. However, Zander has been there and effective for Hearts for the past 18 months, and Craig is back to full fitness, so I’m sure they’ll be alright.

“As a fan, I hope to attend, but first I need to try to find some tickets.” It’s harder than you might expect. Maybe after we allow Aston Villa beat us in Europe, I’ll text John McGinn to let him know he’s due me a couple! Going with the kids and being on the other side of it is what I would like to do.

With Nick Montgomery taking over for Lee Johnson in September, Marshall has made 28 appearances for the Hibees this season and has been a vital member of the team. He was part of the Leith team that left for Dubai yesterday to train in the warm temperatures for a week over the winter break.

Hibernian’s David Marshall

Prior to focusing on helping the Scots on the continent in June, he is concentrating on securing European slots at the club level. Marshall acknowledges that the tournament’s opening match against the hosts in Munich is the best one yet, and he believes Scotland should be aiming to score points in this encounter.
